Description:

[b] What Was It? (Harper's Monthly, March 1859) The narrator, who is living in a rooming house reputed to be haunted since the death of its former owner, a crooked banker, is attacked by an invisible monstrosity. The narrator, who is a very strong man, manages to overpower it and tie it up, despite its simian strength. Tied to a bed, it is a local marvel for a short time, but it eventually dies (of starvation?). Exactly what it was, the narrator never reveals, but a plaster casting shows it to be a horrible travesty of mankind. There may have been a connection between it and the banker, or it may be one of the invisible beings that seem to operate at seances.
